This book, The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende, was previously shown as a possibility for being one of my favorite books. It's still pretty close to the top of the list. The book tells the story of four generations of the Trueba family, from the perspective of two family members. The story spans over four different countries in South America, starting in the late 1800's. Not only is the novel pretty on point when it comes to historical events, but the novel has a certain charm about it. There is some speculation that parts of the novel are loosely based upon family members of Allende. The charm of the novel is probably why the author became a celebrity in the literary world after the publication of the novel in 1982, as well as combining the perfect amount of elements such as grief, comedy, romance, and mysticism. If you enjoy reading historical fiction that is based upon generations of family history, then I would highly recommend this novel!
