DAY 05: Your Favorite Quote...

"To thine own self be true."
- Shakespeare's Hamlet

"All that matters is to love and be loved."
- Unknown

I guess I should just face the fact that it's almost close to impossible for me to pick favorites of anything. Hehe. Equipped with these two quotes as reminders each and every day, makes for a really good way to lead a happy (or happier) life. For me, they are frequent reminders of what to keep focus on in the daily craziness of my life.

For the "To thine own self be true" quote, I only knew of the modern adaptation that says, "Be true to thine own self", until someone pointed out to me that in fact it was used in Hamlet as a line of advice from a dying father to his son. I've never been a fan of Shakespeare, but I believe in giving credit where credit is due! The quote is pretty self-explanatory, but is a great way for me to stay grounded, to not get tied up into situations that can change us for the worse. If put in the right situation, a lot of people will react to events in ways that surprise not only other people, but themselves as well. In recent years, I've realized that within myself and most of the time when it happened, I didn't like what kind of person I was being. So this just reminds me to keep grounded, keep my head on straight, and lead with what I believe in, no matter what, cause at the end of the day, I don't want to lay in my bed thinking about how I didn't stay true to what I really believe.

"All that matters is to love and be loved" means all types of love, not just romantic love. I believe that all living creatures want to be loved and cared for, above all else. Especially human beings, who are often wandering around trying to get a grasp on the life that is handed to them, and just want to be loved; to know that they are not alone in this world. When I die, I know that what I would want more than anything else, is to say that I loved and was loved. That would be my greatest achievement and legacy to leave behind.
